A great read. Explores several sides of a complex subject. For myself, whatever gets you through the day is important, and that includes religion. Vitally necessary for any culture that wants to survive. Scientists who say the Universe is cold and uncaring have limited experience in spending time in a natural setting, watching the bees, hawks, and humans. Thanks for your hard work, Thomas.
Thank you, Tom. From reading about your time in Alaska, it's hard to imagine that one can look upon nature without appreciating its splendor. For while the coldness of the rain and heat of the sun are both emotionless and entirely indifferent to human suffering, the very fact that human life persists in the face of such opposition is a miracle in and of itself.
The biologist and the beehive, the chemist and compound, the mathematician and proof; how wonderous it is that a student can look upon these structures and discern form, design, and function?
We will always wrestle with these first and last questions about the universe, and still, in man's smallness within the cosmos, he often can't help but marvel at the universe around him.
In my world, the Universe is conscious, and I've had experiences that convince me that it is not as unfeeling and as indifferent as we may think. It's my own form of religion, without the trappings of mainstream spiritual endeavors, but it is based on my personal experience in the wilderness. To wax philosophical, the wilderness is an undistorted mirror that can drive some people crazy, or bring others to a greater understanding of the majesty of this Universe in which we dwell.
This is a must read. Well done!
Thank you so much, Willie. Our society is more than willing to discuss the bad; we mustn’t shy from the good.
