Brilliant dismantling of the genius mythology. The Stephenson example really drives it home btw because he basically built his expertise from scrath, no fancy schooling or anything. I saw this same pattern when I worked in tech labs where the ones who obsessivly tinker'd with code ended up solving problems that supposedly "smarter" grads couldnt. Its almost like sustained intrigue does more heavy lifting than raw IQ.
